What makes athletics a classical endeavor? Why is a vibrant athletic program not only relevant, but essential to classical education? What is meant by the statement, “the most classical part of any modern progressive education institution is actually their athletics program”? This seminar is meant to explore the pillars of classical education in an athletics program and to make a defense for the idea that athletics is indeed classical.
Eric Boerboom is the Athletic Director at the Geneva School of Boerne. While at Geneva he has also coached basketball, cross country, and golf. Prior to coming to Geneva, he served as PE director and coached basketball at Brazos Christian School in Bryan Texas, was the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at the University of Wisconsin Superior, and he was involved at a startup school in Waller Texas where he designed and implement the athletic program. Eric graduated from the University of Wisconsin Superior with a Bachelor of Science in History with a Minor in Coaching and he earned a Master of Arts in Athletic Administration with an emphasis on coaching theory and strategy from America Public University. He has been married to his wife Beth for 13 years and they have four children Jaden (10), Clara (8), Aniah (5), Amara (2) with a fifth due in November!
