Protecting Our Students & Averting Risk: Ministry Safe
Led by: Gregory Love, Co-founder, Ministry Safe and Abuse Prevention Systems
This preconference session is about what schools can do to protect our children against sexual abuse. It is important that every school understand the risk and have policies and procedures in place that create a safe environment for their children and those who serve them.
Schedule
- Coffee & Fellowship 8:00 AM
- Session I - Understanding the Risk of Child Sexual Abuse in Education 8:30 AM
We cannot reduce a risk we do not understand ... and sexual abuse risk is not intuitive. This session will address the common misconceptions that lead to weak efforts, followed by a discussion of how the risk of child sexual abuse unfolds in education settings (including classical models).
- Session II - An Effective Safety System 10:15 AM
With an understanding of the risk, it is possible to address it. This session will describe (and provide resources to implement) an Effective Safety System, which includes five parts: Sexual Abuse Awareness Training, Skillful Screening Processes, Appropriate Criminal Background Checks, Tailored Policies & Procedures, and Systems for Monitoring and Oversight.
- Lunch 11:30 AM
- Session III - Peer-to-Peer Sexual Abuse Risks 1:30 PM
The most common form of sexual abuse risk in education is peer sexual abuse, involving a sexually aggressive child – even very young children. This session will provide a framework for understanding peer-to-peer sexual abuse and methods to address it.
- Session IV - Failures to Report and other Lessons from the Ditch 3:00 PM
As sexual abuse lawyers, the principals at MinistrySafe provide daily legal guidance to child-serving organizations (including schools) related to child sexual abuse. Many of the questions are the same, and most involve a requirement to report the abuse. This session will discuss common failures and challenges, followed by recent examples of failures by educators and school administrators related to child sexual abuse (i.e., reputation preservation, peer sexual abuse, fear of making a false allegation, historical allegations). Q&A if time permits.
